Hotels and Resorts in Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico has been a special place for us, both before and after having our son. It’s an easy flight from the East Coast, which makes it such a great option when you’re craving warm weather in the middle of winter.
From the colorful streets of Old San Juan to the laid-back beaches of Rincón and the island charm of Vieques, there’s always something new to explore. Families will find plenty of kid-friendly spots, and the mix of familiar comforts and cultural experiences makes travel here feel approachable, even if your Spanish is limited.
What really stands out in Puerto Rico is the sense of community and rhythm of daily life. You’ll see families gathering at the beach, neighbors chatting in the plazas, and kids running around late into the evening. For us, as a queer, multicultural family, the presence of both locals and expats—especially in places like Vieques—has made Puerto Rico feel welcoming and easy to settle into, even for a short stay..

El Blok - Located on Vieques, just across the street from the beach and right along the El Malecon boardwalk, El Blok puts you in the heart of the island’s small-town magic. You’ll need to reach Vieques via a short flight from the main island (or by ferry), and once you're on Vieques, local taxis or golf-cart-style transport will get you to the hotel easily. Standout features include its bold, modern design, rooftop lounge & pool, intimate 30-room size, and its prime walkable location near restaurants, the waterfront, and local energy. (We LOVED our stay here!)
Finca Victoria - Finca Victoria sits atop a hill in Vieques (Barrio Pilón), surrounded by lush vegetation and peaceful nature. It’s more remote, so expect a longer ride once you land on Vieques (taxi or arranged transport is recommended). But the payoff is a sense of retreat and tranquility. What sets Finca Victoria apart: beautifully designed treehouses, cabins, and even a vintage airstream; every unit has outdoor showers, decks, and garden or sea views; a wellness-oriented vibe with spa & yoga; and communal spaces that feel intimate and restorative.
Olive Boutique Hotel - Adults Only. Olive is tucked in the Condado / lagoon front area in San Juan, making it accessible to the airport (SJU) by a short drive (typically 10–15 minutes, traffic dependent) and very walkable or short-taxi distance to beach, dining, and city life. Though not directly on the ocean, it’s lagoon-front and close to Condado Beach, with plenty of “walk-to” convenience. Standout features: boutique-luxury design, private verandas and outdoor tubs in some suites, rooftop pool, its restaurant “Sage,” and membership in the Small Luxury Hotels of the World. (My wife stayed here on a solo vacation and had a great time!)
Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve - This resort is situated about 15 miles west of San Juan and easily reachable via car from SJU in ~20–30 minutes. It's location just outside of the "city" makes it a bit more relaxed and calm. Standout features include: world-class luxury, golf courses, expansive coastline & private beach offerings, seamless resort amenities, and a sense of high-end escape not far from the capital.
